The last word from the cross is a word of fulfillment announcing the fulfillment of all things: “It is finished.” Completed. Perfected. Mission accomplished. It is done literally to the death. There are no loose ends for us to tie, no missing pieces for us to puzzle over, nothing to be added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided. “It is finished.” The redemption price is paid. The world’s sin is atoned for. The work of reconciliation, peacemaking, is accomplished. The Law is fulfilled. “There is therefore now no condemnation of those who are in Christ Jesus.” It is finished.

It is Passover night, the night before the day the children of Israel walked though blood-stained doorways into freedom and life as God’s people. This is the paschal night, the night of the remembrance meal—the hard, unleavened bread, the bitter herbs, the lamb roasted to dry toughness. The Lamb’s blood painted on the doorposts. It is the night of judgment and death as God seeks out the blood. Under the blood of the lamb, you are safe. Death passes over. Without the blood you are dead. It is neither safe nor salutary to deal with God apart from the blood of the Lamb.

The Fifth Sunday of Lent

The next word is the Jesus dying word, a word of committal, a word of trust. His dying words are faithful, full of trust in His Father, trusting that in His death His Father will receive Him in loving arms just as the father of the prodigal received his son with open and welcoming arms. Here again is the paradox of faith. Jesus had cried out in abandonment, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” and yet now He cries out in faith, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!”

The Fourth Sunday of Lent

The next word from the cross is a word of suffering: “I thirst.” This is genuine, human pain, the parched lips of our humanity desiccated by the dry desert of our sin. Do not imagine that Jesus had some special exemption from suffering because He is the Son of God. Quite the contrary! His pain is all our pain combined. “He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows.” He is the Sufferer who embodies all suffering, bearing in His own wounded flesh the suffering and sickness of a humanity fallen into decay and death.

Today, the Church remembers St. Stephen, the first martyr after Christ’s ascension. His confession recalled the stiff-necked, uncircumcised hearts and ears of Judah that would not receive the Righteous One (Acts 7:51–52). But as his body was being stoned and his spirit received by the Lord Jesus, Stephen cried, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:59–60), bearing witness to the One who also said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

This fourth sermon focuses upon the apostle Paul and his vision of a new creation in Christ. That vision is infinite, encompassing the restoration of all things, and yet also intimate, centered in the death and resurrection of Christ.

This sermon focuses upon the strange figure of the prophet Zephaniah. His vision at the end of his book introduces us to a peculiar kind of joy: Advent joy. This is not joy without sorrow but joy in the presence of one who comes to us in the midst of our sorrow. This voice and this vision invite us to experience the paradox of Advent joy as we prepare for our Lord’s coming.

The strange figure of John the Baptizer, the voice from the edge, and his vision of Jesus, so different from the Jesus typically portrayed, calling us to repent in preparation for our Lord’s coming.

This first Advent sermon focuses upon a text from Revelation, John’s vision of the heavenly Jerusalem, descending like a bride.

In our worship for the fourth week in Advent we will contemplate how we can prepare ourselves and others for the arrival of Jesus through our proclaiming. John the Baptist stands as the forerunner of all future proclaimers of Christ and gives us the courage to use our own voices to proclaim our devotion to the One who is born to save.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

God Calls Us to See Our Lives in Light of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. This is our larger landscape. This is our larger vision. When suffering enters our lives, when difficulties endanger our discipleship, Peter encourages us to see this larger vision of our risen and ruling Lord.

The story of the stoning of Stephen -- this story has it all. Care for the poor. Miraculous powers. Murderous threats. Impassioned speech. Glory shining in the heavens and blood flowing on the earth. And somehow, God is ruling amid all these things. But what is God doing?

Through our reading in 1 Peter this week we learn:

• Our Good Shepherd is our example in suffering… and so much more!

• Our Good Shepherd is an example of endurance… and more.

• Our Good Shepherd is the example of forgiveness for those who do us wrong… and more.

In this week’s lesson from Luke’s Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus joining a couple of His followers on the road to Emmaus. They did not recognize Jesus.

It is not that these travelers were confronted with a case of mistaken identity. Their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. It was not that the Lord Jesus was absent from them. No, He was right there with them on the road, but they were prevented from recognizing Him. They could not see Him for who He is. Jesus remains to them a stranger.

Why?

Easter is, among other things, about the power of the voice. On this Second Sunday of Easter, the risen Lord Jesus comes to you and to me to speak His peace into our hearts so that we may speak that peace into the world.

Easter Sunday gazes upon “Angel Eyes.” The angel in the tomb knows the whole story of Jesus’ resurrection. When he sees the women, he proclaims the Gospel to them, shows them where Jesus’ body had formerly lain, and tells them that they can see Jesus themselves in Galilee. Likewise, the “angels” or messengers of the Church in the apostolic ministry tell God’s people where they can find Jesus and His salvation in the Means of Grace.

On Good Friday, we look through “God’s Eyes” to see what is happening during the Passion: the once-for-all atonement for the sin of the whole world and the justification of all sinners on Easter.

On Maundy Thursday, there is “More Than Meets the Eye” to the Lord’s Supper. We will look into the Old Testament background of the Last Supper and rejoice in the mystery that Jesus, in and with, bread and wine, gives us His body and blood in order to deliver to us the benefits of His Passion.

On Palm Sunday, we look through the “Opened Eyes,” given to us by our Savior and whereby our King, humble and riding on a donkey, removes the scales from our eyes; and in our Baptisms we are given the gift of the sight of faith that we would behold His Word and Sacraments and take in the forgiveness and light and life that Christ gives to us as pure gift.
